M by Montcalm Shoreditch London Tech City

Great service at a reasonable rate isn't always easy to find in London. Luckily, that's what M by Montcalm Shoreditch offers, with the added luxury of an indoor pool, spa and sauna and a 17th-floor restaurant, where you can admire the city views (so long as you've got a head for heights). Rooms are well proportioned and come with air-con, TV and laptop safe. The hotel is surrounded by lively bars and restaurants and has good transport links to the rest of London. (Old Street Underground is a 3-minute walk, King's Cross station and the Eurostar terminal at St Pancras are 10 minutes away by tube).

My only visit here has been for a spa day.

I've had a lot of spa experiences and this wasn't one of the best. Although the staff were pleasant, my full body massage was disappointing. About 40 minutes was spent on my back alone, leaving the rest of my body to be rushed in the remaining time. There had also clearly been a salt treatment in the room earlier in the day which had just been brushed to the floor, leaving the floor covered in chunks of salt and unpleasant to walk on.

None of the water severed in the spa was cold and the pool area was often wet and slippery but not mopped up although there was an attendant visible.

The Groupon deal for a midweek spa break makes this good value cost wise, but the quality certainly wasn't the best.

M by Montcalm London Tech City is a plush hotel next to Old Street Roundabout. Well placed for the City and Shoreditch, it's convenient for both business and pleasure.

First impressions were mixed; I was handed a glass of bubbly on arrival (plus!) but there is no discernible queueing system for the front desks, and service was slow.

The rooms are large by London standards, with big comfy beds and gigantic TVs. We didn't have the best view (though I did get to wave to a friendly man on a crane near my window!) Thankfully there were decent curtains.

The bathroom was lovely, with a great rainfall shower. For a more extensive bathing experience you can visit the spa (access included for hotel guests) with small but luxurious swimming pool, sauna and steam room.

It had everything we needed - plus a fair few extra gadgets that we didn't try. We didn't have breakfast, but headed to Honest Burger across the road instead.

Rooms are normally £140+ per night, but we found it for £105 as a Secret Hotel on a certain last minute website (you can find out which secret hotel is with a little effort and savvy).

I'd recommend it for its mix of convenience and luxury, especially if you can get it for the right price.

So .... This hotel happens to have one of my favourite spas in london. It boasts a large Versace colour changing pool which is not only the right temperature every time I go there but also the perfect depth.... Not too deep and not shallow.

The jacuzzi is warm and very relaxing and they've made sure to leave flavoured waters and fruits for rejuvenation if needed near by (all complimentary)

There's a large sauna, steam room and lounge bends with separate chairs all around so you never need to be "that" person standing at the edge of the pool ... Prices start at £120 which includes a treatment or so but its all very worth it and very clean. The best part? Never once have I seen children there... ;)

I really enjoyed staying in this hotel. It's very modern and slick, with a lot of attention to details and an observance to the "tech city" surroundings. Our room had a smart phone included in the room, so guests visiting from foreign lands not wanting to waste their data and call allowances have the freedom to call home and check out whats going on on Facebook without facing a large bill when they get home. The lights are controlled by a touch screen panel (although what's wrong with a light switch i'm not 100% sure) and the TV is massive, with access to movies. The beds are comfortable, the curtains very good indeed at keeping out the light, but our view was of a very large hole in the ground where, by the looks of it, a future sky scraping building is in the initial stages of being built. Not ideal, not not enough to ruin our stay. The spa is nice, small, with a bit more attention to detail being needed with some of the fixtures (nothing an afternoon of just getting their shit together wouldn't fix) and the bathrobes are some of the comfiest i've ever worn!

We have just returned from a weekend away in this hotel and would definitely stay again! Spa very clean and quiet! Only thing disappointing is paying more to book through and be held to them prices even though the cost of the room on the day was £70 less! Live and learn book direct through the hotel next time! Highly recommend this hotel!
