A terrific start to the week, wine tasting in the humongous cellars under St James.

We learned how to open a champagne bottle using just a sword, and how not to, cue exploding bottle,

Then we were tutored on the origins and flavours of 3 reds and 3 whites from all over the world, from France to New Zealand. Interestingly not one of the more than 30 Time Out readers who'd gathered for the event used the spitoon at all. I was worried that I'd be the only one to skip this prominent part of the wine tasting ritual but no. Reader we drank every drop!

Amazing venue, great company and delicious wine and food! A perfect way to start the week with the wine tasting, in the beautiful Stafford's wine cellar.

A big thank you to the Master sommelier, Gino, for his precious knowledge about the wines. And thanks to the staff. Very friendly people.

And of course, thank you @RayJonesTimeOut for organising this great event!

What a wonderful hotel. Our Time Out Card wine tasting event in the Cellars deep beneath St James was simply superb. Our host - the hotel's Master Sommelier - was so knowledgeable, and he shared some wonderful wines with us. The food pairings were delicious. To finish the night I headed to The American Bar. What an atmospheric spot. The truth is I didn't need that final Martini but it tasted great and the barman delivered it with a very warm smile.

The perfect way to kick off the week - Wine tasting in the cellars on a Monday evening. An excellent night full of delicious wine, great food and a lot of fun people. Thank you! The staff were all very friendly and knew their stuff.
