Time Out says

Members of the public can access the collection of two million maps, books, photos, documents and objects spanning the past 500 years of geographical exploration. Users can research the lives of famous explorers such as Livingstone or Mary Kingsley, study nineteenth-century maps of Britain, Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and Europe, or use the collection of travel guides to research a holiday. The project, which was partly funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, includes online access as well personal visits to the Foyle Reading Room (over-16s only, unless by arrangement, take proof of identity to register as a new Reader) and exhibitions plus educational events for school and adult groups.

What’s on

London Map Fair

If looking at our chaotic world through neat gridlines of latitude and longitude sounds pretty appealing right now, then hit up this long-running carnival of cartography at the Royal Geographical Society. Dealers from around the world are convening again to show off their rare collections alongside a programme of fascinating talks and lectures. Beautiful maps of sixteenth-century London, vintage London Transport charts and intricate celestial globes will be a treat for the eyes. Some of these prize specimens are worth nearly fifty grand, but fear not, this event is welcoming to map fans of every kind, with talks about map collecting for beginners giving you an intro to this niche-but-fascinating hobby.
