Shirley Manson, Butch Vig and the other two get back together to celebrate 20 years since their debut album

After performing only sporadically for almost a decade, Shirley Manson and her electro-grunge boys came back with a new album ‘Not Your Kind of People’ in 2012. For fans the bad news is that there’s no more new material, but the good news is that huge ’90s singles ‘Only Happy When It Rains’ and ‘Stupid Girl’ are dead certs for the set list at this Brixton show, where the band will be celebrating 20 years since their hugely popular debut album. We’re assuming that means a full run-through of the album’s 12 tracks.

I’m not sure if I can be objective, since I’ve been waiting for this gig for 19 years. Sad, I know, but they didn’t play in my home country when I was a teenager. So for me it was an absolutely faultless gig. It felt like 15 again and Shirley stopped in time, at 49 with the same charisma and the boys, although even older, showed that they can still rock! Since it was a celebration of the 20th anniversary of their first album, they played only stuff from that album with lots of B side track that I wasn’t familiar with, which was great. A lot of very good guitar hard rock songs, much rawer than the better known tracks. But I wish they covered also music from the later albums (they did two later songs during encore). Anyway, it was a very nostalgic but also a very hilarious gig, especially when Shirley asked for a pair of clean underwear which she apparently… had forgotten to put on.
