Theatrically presented circus songs from a caravan in Devon head up the bill of this month's 'Folk Rising', proving that Sam Lee and The Nest Collective's regular Cecil Sharp House night is more about musical exploration and fresh expression than rigid definitions of folk. In support, Herefordshire's Mikey Kirkpatrick, as Bird Radio, loops flutes, bones, a red kick drum suitcase and vocals to create an intensely curious mash-up between electronic music and traditional folk tales, and singer Bradstock reimagines bucolic English folk melodies, recasting them as genre-straddling ditties perfect for jazz improv and extended harmonies.
