Boundary-pushing Gnawa master who has woven the ancient Morrocan musical form with everything from the jazzy trip hop of Matt Gray and Mark Horwood to the English folk songs of wife Suzi Hicks – and here collaborates with West African drumming and singing band BY. Lagnawi is a charismatic dancer and player of the Guinbri – a lute-like stringed instrument made from camel skin – while his mesmeric voice harks back to the original use of Gnawa in rousing people into a 'cleansing' trance (very much unlike UK trance, then).
