The Little Match Girl Passion

I Fagiolini directed by Robert Hollingworth, with puppetry by Matthew Robins.

M Praetorius's 'Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott!'; 'Es ist ein' Ros entsprungen'; 'Aichinger Noe, Noe'; JS Bach's 'Jesu, meine Freude', BWV227; Hassler's 'In dulci jubilo'; Trad Danish arr H Metz 'Maria gennem torne gar'; Kirkpatrick arr Chambers/Holten 'Derude i stalden'; and David Lang's 'The Little Match Girl Passion'.

In this unique concert, Gramophone Award-winning vocal ensemble I Fagiolini bring together one of JS Bach's greatest motets with David Lang's' The Little Match Girl Passion'. Based on Hans Christian Andersen's heartbreaking story, Lang's Pulitzer Prize-winning piece takes its inspiration from Bach's 'St Matthew Passion', and is here animated with exquisite shadow puppetry by Matthew Robins. Threading the works together are delicate and evocative carols from Germany and Denmark, creating a poignant yuletide concert.
