Yes, you heard right. This month, our two favourite summer activities – hitting the pool and petting any dog in sight – combine in some kind of joyous big bang of happiness. It’s the UK’s first swimming gala for dogs.

Organised by dog-sitting site Rover.com, on Tuesday July 17, all your willing pooches are invited to gather at Hackney’s West Reservoir Centre for a day of mutt-diving.

Aimed at encouraging pet owners to help keep their furry friends cool in the summer heat, there’ll be four 10m dashes taking place from 4pm to 5.30pm. Entry is free, while non-dog owners can also come and watch the paddle for the crown.

It’ll be shih tzu v spaniel, poodle v pug. Will a little sausage come and steal the title? Only time will tell. We just know that it makes the World Cup excitement look pretty tame in comparison.
