If the Piccadilly line is the cornerstone of your fun weekend plans, then watch out, because some serious disruption is coming your way this summer.

TfL is currently in the middle of a massive programme of works to upgrade the trusty navy blue line, which accounts for more than 10 percent of all tube journeys. It’s adding in brand new trains with walk-through carriages and air conditioning (much needed in the current sweltering weather), better digital displays, improved step-free access, as well as upgraded tracks and power systems. Of course, all this work comes at a cost for travellers, in the form of an extensive programme of line closures that'll leave you hunting for alternative ways to get where you need to be.

The big weekends to watch out for are Saturday June 20-Sunday June 21, when there’ll be no service from Cockfosters to Uxbridge, and Saturday August 1-Sunday August 2, when there’ll be no service between Cockfosters and Heathrow. These closures mean that the entire central London section of the line will be out of action, so plan ahead to avoid missing your summery bottomless brunch or sweaty late night gig.

These two weekends aren’t the only disruption to watch out for. There’ll also be quite a few other partial closures to be aware of, especially if you live at the outer ends of the Piccadilly line.

When will the Piccadilly line be closed this summer?

These are the main dates on which you need to watch out for Piccadilly line closures this summer:

  • Friday 5 (Night Tube)-Sunday June 7 – Hammersmith to Heathrow and Uxbridge
  • Friday June 12 (Night Tube) – entire line closed
  • Saturday June 13 (until 14:00) – Hyde Park Corner to Acton Town
  • Saturday June 20-Sunday June 21 – Cockfosters to Uxbridge
  • Friday June 26 (Night Tube) – King’s Cross St Pancras to Heathrow
  • Saturday June 27-Sunday June 28 – King’s Cross St Pancras to Northfields and Uxbridge
  • Friday July 10 (Night Tube)-Sunday July 12 — Hammersmith to Heathrow and Uxbridge
  • Friday July 17 (Night Tube) — Hyde Park Corner to Cockfosters
  • Saturday July 18 - Sunday July 19 — King's Cross St Pancras to Cockfosters
  • Friday July 31 (night tube) — entire line closed
  • Saturday August 1-Sunday August 2 — Cockfosters and Heathrow

Will the entire Piccadilly line be shut?

Only on selected Friday nights, when the night tube will be out of action. Otherwise, the line is closing in sections, with differents parts affected at different times. Check a tube map against the above list to work out how your journey will be affected.

How to get to Heathrow airport during the Piccadilly line closures

Even without the Piccadilly line, there are plenty of ways to get to the airport. You can use the Elizabeth line and Heathrow Express to get to Heathrow. Or you can travel to Acton Town on the District line, and hop on the Piccadilly line if that section of the line is still open.

Alternatively, branch out and get there by other means – like coach, taxi and your own car.
