While many of us look forward to celebrating the festive season with loved ones, up to 500,000 older people in the UK face spending Christmas Day alone. Community Christmas is a way for them to find some company on December 25, from volunteer-run Christmas lunches to home visits.

By organising and listing community Christmas lunches and other social events on the day, it helps create lasting bonds between older people, those who care about them and the wider communities we’re all part of.

So if you’ve got no big plans this Christmas, check the Community Christmas website to see if events near you need volunteers on the big day, even for a few hours. Or just knock on a neighbour’s door to see if they’d like to share your Christmas lunch. It could make a huge difference.

Now here are 28 more ways to make London better.
