If you’re going underground in London, chances are you’re going to have to ride a long ol’ escalator to get there. Eighty-nine Underground stations have escalators managed by TfL, but which station has the most?

Thanks to a new Freedom of Information request (FOI), we now have the answer. London’s tube station with the most escalators is... Bank/Monument. Are we that surprised? This labyrinthine station has a mega 35 escalators (if you count its four travelators, which the person who answered the FOI did).

In second place was Waterloo, another maze-like station with five entrances and a whopping 26 escalators (again, including two travelators). Waterloo had escalators 14 before the Jubilee line arrived in 1999, when it got bumped up to 24.

Liverpool Street has the third moving staircases, with a grand total of 24. According to travel blogger Diamond Geezer, this tally includes six escalators on the Moorgate side of the station. Livvy Street had only nine escalators before the arrival of the Lizzie Line, which added nine more.

The 10 London stations with the most escalators

  1. Bank – 35
  2. Waterloo – 26
  3. Liverpool Street – 24
  4. Canary Wharf – 20
  5. Tottenham Court Road – 20
  6. Bond Street – 19
  7. King's Cross St. Pancras – 19
  8. Canary Wharf (Elizabeth Line) – 17
  9. Westminster – 17
  10. London Bridge – 17

Euston station will be closed over the May Bank Holiday weekend: closure dates, service disruption and what you need to know.

Peckham Rye’s 1930s shopping arcade will be knocked down this summer.
