East Londoners, we hate to be the bearers of bad news, but the Overground is the next major train line in the city to be affected by significant travel disruption. The Suffragette Line, which connects Gospel Oak to Barking, is set to face major disruption in 2027.
The disruption is down to replacement works being carried out on four 130-year-old bridges in the Forest Gate area. The bridges on Talbot Road, Strode Road, Stracey Road and Latimer Road carry the Suffragette line between Leytonstone High Road and Woodgrange Park stations.
Work will begin on Talbot Road and Stracey Road on September 1, followed by work on Strode Road and Latimer Road on September 28. And it’s not just Overground users that’ll have to watch out: it’s worth paying attention if you’re driving through the area, because Network Rail have said the road and pavement below the bridges will be closed throughout the project, as well as some smaller road closures in the area for short periods next year. The work is due to be completed by late summer 2027.
Joe Kennedy, infrastructure director for Network Rail Anglia, said the company is ‘really sorry for the disruption’ and it will be working ‘very closely with residents and businesses to keep the impact to a minimum while we get the job done’.
The good news is that the disruption is only meant to be on the weekends, so it hopefully won’t have knock on effect on commuters. Plus, replacing the bridges will (hopefully) prevent unplanned disruption for the future. The new bridges are expected to last right up until 2150.
