Few sweet treats can compare to a simple, soft, perfectly chewy cookie – and this is what Parisian-American cookie chain Laura Todd does best. And bakery buffs will be pleased to know that a globally-renowned cookie shop is finally taking a short trip across the Channel and opening its first-ever London location.
Laura Todd opened its first store in Chicago nearly a century-and-a-half ago, then started popping up all over Paris in the ’80s. It’ll open its first London location at Gloucester Road Underground station in May.
Laura Todd cookies are far from your amateur ‘just add water’ shop-bought mix. The ingredients are sourced locally in Paris and include raw sugar, free-range eggs, Fléchard pastry butter from Normandy, traditional French flour and fairtrade cocoa.
Classic cookies to try include the Sweet Milky for those who appreciate the age-old combination of milk chocolate and a buttery, melty cookie. For the more adventurous, there’s the Crousty Peanut (milk chocolate, puree and peanut pieces) and the Amazing Matcha (white chocolate and matcha green tea).
The legacy of the quaint cookie chain dates back to 1902, when Iowa-born Laura Todd baked her famous cookies for the first time in Illinois, inspired by a family recipe. Over the course of a century, Laura Todd garnered a robust reputation; in 2023, the cookies were voted the best in Île-de-France by Le Parisien.
For the London shop, Laura Todd will be serving coffee in collaboration with boutique French roasters My Little Cup. A stroll down a sunny street in south Kensington with a soft cookie in one hand and an ice-cold latte in the other? Sounds pretty sweet to us.
Can’t wait until May to try these legendary cookies? Laura Todd posts recipes on its website, including a take on how to make the perfect cookie, which you can read here.
Laura Todd will open in Gloucester Road Underground station on Gloucester Road, SW7 4SF, at the end of May.
