Every Thursday, bars, pubs and kerbsides throughout central London teem with people out for post-work pints. Every office has a go-to. But over the next few weeks, you might want to consider swapping your regular haunt for drinks aboard one of the city’s most famous ships.
Every Thursday from now until September 24, the Golden Hinde is turning into a floating pub. Its ‘Thirsty Thursdays’ will run once a week from 5.30pm until 10pm and there’s no booking required.
Built in 1973, the ship is a full-size reconstruction of the galleon that Sir Francis Drake used when he became the first Englishman to circumnavigate the globe. It sailed 100,000 miles across the sea as a travelling museum before it finally moored at St Mary Overie Dock in Southwark in 1996. September 14 will mark exactly 30 years since the Hinde pulled up at her permanent home.
As well as offering some of the best views of the Thames, drinks here could save you a pretty penny. Entry to the ship on Thirsty Thursdays will be completely free (it’s normally £6) and it promises to serve ‘some of the best value drinks in SE1’.
The bar is on the main deck and, once you’ve got your pint or glass of wine, you’re invited to explore the vessel while you sip. Head below deck to peek inside Drake’s cabin, browse the armoury and see the cramped, musty conditions that sixteenth-century sailors were subjected to.
