Love biltong? The Springboks? Braai? Bunny chow? There’s a new festival planned for south London that will be right up your street. It’s called Lekker in London and it’s hoping to land in Cheam Park in August. The event will be a celebration of all things South African and bills itself as the ‘biggest South African festival in British history’.
A line-up of South African talent has been confirmed for the saffa jol (the South African term for a shindig) and more than 2,300 tickets have already been snapped up. Comedian Kevin Fraser is on the bull alongside Johannesburg rock band Prime Circle, musician Majozi, electronic group Goodlook and rapper Biggy. There’ll also be South African drinks, a traditional braai and a screening of the South Africa vs New Zealand rugby match.
Lyle Millar, the event organiser, told the Local Democracy Service that he hopes the event will bring together members of the South African diaspora in south London, known affectionately as the ‘Biltong Belt’, as well as Brits less familiar with South African culture.
He said: ‘For many South Africans living in Britain, the festival provides a rare opportunity to reconnect with a sense of home and community. At the same time, it offers British attendees the chance to experience South African culture, warmth and food in a friendly environment.’
Lekker in London will take place in Cheam Park on Saturday August 29. Tickets are still available from £49 each – find them on the event website here.
