This celebratory concert is given by friends and students (past and present) of Royal College of Music cello professor Melissa Phelps to mark her sixtieth birthday. introduced by Miranda Richardson. The Ariensky Ensemble, cellists Paul Watkins, Thomas Carroll, Alexander Chaushian, Rebecca Gilliver and Moray Welsh; with pianists Julian Jacobson and Caroline Palmer. Ariensky's Variations on a theme of Tchaikovsky (from Quartet, Op 35); Handel's Sonata in G minor for two cellos and piano; Debussy's Sonata in D minor; Fitzenhagen's Concert Walzes for four cellos; and Brahms's Sonata in D, Op 78. Plus, music for cello ensemble by Bernstein, Casals, Fauré and Piazzolla.
