African Messiah

'African Messiah' is an African experience of Handel's 'Messiah'. It is a new work by composer and multi-instrumentalist Tunde Jegede, combining themes and melodies from Handel's oratorio with African musical traditions. The work draws in particular on the sounds of the kora (West African harp-lute) and music in the griot tradition, and brings together international singers (including Josephine Amankwah), musicians and ensembles for a unique performance. (Deloitte Ignite 2012 is curated by artist Yinka Shonibare. His Africa Weekend is a celebration of traditional African and avant-garde arts and culture. The events include cinema, visual arts, dance, music, food and a club night.)
