The pianist Elisabeth Leonskaja takes her turn in LSO St Luke's Beethoven Piano Sonata Cycle, with Piano Sonata No 8 in C minor ('Pathétique'); Piano Sonata No 9 in E, Op 14 No 1; and Piano Sonata No 31 in A flat, Op 110. (Beethoven's beautiful 'Pathétique' sonata sits alongside his painful realisation of ever-increasing deafness. Op 14 No 1 is an expansive and lyrical work dedicated to Baroness Josefa von Braun. The expressive final movement of Op 110 contains the deeply moving 'Klagender Gesang' (tearful song).
