The Philharmonia under Tomás Netopil, with pianist Marc-André Hamelin, performs the Overture to 'Der fliegende Holländer', (Wagner's supernatural tale of the 'Flying Dutchman', in which two seafaring men strike a bargain); Liszt's highly virtuosic Piano Concerto No 2 in A; and Brahms's monumental Symphony No 1 – a piece that took the composer decades to perfect and which was referred to by some contemporaries as 'Beethoven's Tenth Symphony'. (Note: at 6pm there is a pre-concert talk with Marc-André Hamelin. Admission is free)
