Ian Burnside's latest theatre piece based on the life of the poet and composer Ivor Gurney. Gurney's studies at the Royal College of Music were interrupted by World War One. Perhaps due to what he termed his 'neurasthenia', perhaps due to being shell-shocked, Gurney became increasingly ill after the war and spent the last 15 years of his life in the City of London Mental Hospital in Dartford. Burnside has interwoven poems, songs and piano works with letters and eye-witness accounts from friends and family, to produce a multi-layered show. This work in development is performed by senior GSMD students, in collaboration with theatre professionals.
