Clean design, slick service and expensive serveware typify a D&D London establishment. The latest venture from the people who now run the (Conran founded) Skylon, Launceston Place and Quaglino's is no exception. Taking up a large stretch of South Place near Liverpool Street, this glass and metal hotel (D&D's first) has 80 bedrooms, 3 bars, two restaurants and some conference space sprawled across seven floors.

While the rooftop seafood restaurant is light and bright with big windows, white napery and a tiny terrace, the ground floor all-day eatery and bar space, 3 South Place, has a darker colour palette – a dark, shiny bar in front of the open kitchen flanks the dining room, and long concrete-topped tables run down the middle, punctuated by dark green chairs. It's still airy though with wall to ceiling windows round the front.

The menu is full of British and US comfort food classics. Melton Mowbray pork pies, Welsh lamb curry and Longhorn beef hamburgers, plus brasserie-style tarts, salads and aged beef steaks all make an appearance.

A modern classic from the north-east of the US, the 'lobster mac', comprised long macaroni and toothsome lobster chunks coated in a delicate lobster bisque, then finished under the grill. Immaculately presented, it came to the table in a smart, copper Mauviel pan. Our hot dog also looked the part – glazed bun, fat dog with a decent pile of fried onions on top, but for flavour, it was nothing out of the ordinary.

The food at 3 South Place is unlikely to set pulses racing, but it will no doubt become a popular haunt for city slickers, many of whom were already in residence on our lunchtime visit.
