Time Out says

It's easy to see why this amazing value restaurant and bar does a brisk trade in its short line-up of burgers and other North American comfort-food classics.

Please note, Advisory has now closed. Time Out Food editors, March 2019.

Just when you thought London’s burger bar scene was surely already overdone, along comes another, located at the unlovely but up-and-coming Mare Street/Well Street junction. The Advisory, named after the Asian Women’s Advisory Centre that was previously on the site, recently opened with a compelling launch offer of a burger and beer for a fiver.

After just a few weeks of settling in, prices are steeper, but not much (the better-than-average burgers are £5, tasty sides of chilli greens and roasted carrots with thyme are £3 a pop), and the launch offer clearly worked. On a Tuesday evening the place was rammed, they had run out of burger brioche buns, and during the next hour, they ran out of the replacement hot dog brioche buns too and had to move onto the next day’s brunch muffins. ‘What are you gonna do when you run out of those?’ I ask our friendly, busy and very efficient waiter. ‘Close down’, he replies, deadpan.

With a tempting but simple evening menu of just three burgers (beef, bacon, and a veggie option), a hangar steak and the unusual and excellent Canadian dish poutine (melt-in-the-mouth lamb gravy and goats curd, poured over chips) plus amazingly good-value drinks – a gin and tonic costs £2.80, large house wine £3.50 and TsingTao beer £3 – that’s not likely to happen anytime soon.

A good menu and reasonably priced place. Sadly they served my boyfriend a very raw chicken burger, which he had taken a few big bites of without realizing at first due to all the other stuff in the burger. The staff reaction was apathetic and a surly barmaid seemed reluctant to apologise or offer a gesture of goodwill, insisting we still paid for the remainder of the meal even though we had stopped eating as soon as we handed the burger back. Mistakes can happen in restaurants but the way this was dealt was poor. Having been a waitress for seven years I would have been horrified if I'd served someone raw chicken and done my best to rectify it.

Very disappointed by this place. Food below average and disinterested staff. Few hours later and feeling quite unwell, when I called to let them know didn't hear a 'sorry to hear that' but a 'well no one else has complained...'. Unbelievable.

My girlfriend and I both got mild food poisoning from the burgers here. Can see from the comment below that we aren't the only ones that have had issues. Really shocked about the review - since it is dated 2013 I suggest a follow up review as things have clearly changed. Just make sure you have a strong stomach.

Having spent my birthday drinking the cocktails at The Advisory (Double Denim is wonderful even if killer) I was really excited to try the brunch. Two Flat Whites, apple juice, and a massive plate of blueberry pancakes with crispy bacon later I can safely say that if you're looking for somewhere different to go for a lazy brunch with a group of friends, this is the place to go. The coffee is ridiculously smooth, the food delicious, and service is friendly, efficient, and with a smile. I cannot recommend The Advisory enough.

This is my local burger place (5min walk from home!) so I've been there quite a few times. I always have the shrimp po-boy and I'm never disappointed! To be honest, the shrimps don't really stay in the bun for the duration of the meal, they sort of jump ship pretty much at the beginning but I'm not adverse to eating with my hands so that has never bothered me as the dish is so tasty. The french fries are really nice. The only thing I haven't enjoyed so much were the onion rings. I think my belly doesn't appreciate deep fried foods so much and the fries are usually just enough for me. The staff is always lovely and I found it strange that some people commented they didn't ask how the food was as I've always been asked! Looking forward to going back!

This place is amazing. The food is so good and the cost is just right. They have great vegan/veggie friendly options on the menu as well as yummy juicy burgers for the meat lovers. Their all day breakfast food is definitely my hangover go-to.

The vibe is super chilled out, with the staff only staying to chat if you start up conversation. I love this part of Hackney, and I can't wait to check out some of their evening events.

This place has seriously good burgers. No problems in all the times I've visited which is a few recently. Always good. Do try the sides poutine and the wings are great.

Friendly welcoming and very nice menu: breakfast and burgers, all styles. Staff is professional and good!

The best brunches in the neighbourhood. Excellent value, good portion size and super tasty.

Don't know why it says DALSTON on the Time Out area pin? This is on Mare St and firmly on the east side of London Fields. Consistently good burgers and service.

I was expecting great things judging from the review above but was sadly disappointed.

I had a cheeseburger, £7, fries and onion rings. the bun of the burger was dry. It disintegrated as I attempted to eat it. therefore I had to eat the burger in bits with cutlery. The cheese was blah and wouldn't be surprised if it was locally sourced from the iceland store across the road. Chips good if over salty and the onion rings were coated in such a thick batter that the onion within was not cooked properly.

Stay clear of the chilli dog. A dry brioche, with an average sausage, the "chilli" was sauceless and was like no chilli I've ever seen and over all of this the gated blah cheese.

Service was good even though it took ages for the food to appear, and prices reasonable although not as cheap as I'd been led to believe from the above review.

I wish so much it had been better.

I've been meaning to go to this place for ages, having walked past it most days. Finally I went in and it didn't disappoint. Had a really great shrimp po-boy burger and onion rings on the side, pretty much the best onion rings I've had in a long time as well as a good selection of cocktails, I highly recommend the double denim and the bloody mary. Managed to somehow squeeze in the sundae which was incredible, seeing as I have a particularly sweet tooth it was definitely the highlight of the meal. Had such a nice evening here, really great atmosphere matched with great food and really lovely staff. Highly recommend this place to anyone looking to have a different but equally yummy burger and cocktail experience.

I have been here a few times, and it's a really cool burger bar. A friend rented out the upstairs room for a birthday meal, and although there were loads of us they managed to squeeze us in and feed us well. The burgers are really hearty and there is plenty to choose from for the vegetarians too. It's also a nice little spot for an evening cocktail, I had the Paris-Kentucky and it was a great take on a bourbon cocktail- I'm not usually one for any sort of whiskey but this was divine. They also make incredible coffees ( I think they use Ozone coffee?) and bourbon espresso cocktails to pick you up before a night out. Lovely place, lovely staff.

The burger was fantastically delicious! The chips great too! Nice music and atmosphere very cosy in winter and with great and friendly service too.

I've eaten most things on the menu, and a fair few that aren't (Advisory are not precious about making you what you want). The burgers are excellent: juicy patties with veg and pickles, and a nicely melted generous slice of cheese, if that's they way you've rolled. I normally go in the morning for breakfast, and the coffee is about the best in that burgeoning corner of Mare St too. Recommended.

Not being a native of the area, but passing through from the cinema to a gig on a Sunday night I popped in for a spot of nourishment. No Pale Ale supplies but the Crate Golden Ale did the trick and there was no complaints with the food, my Cheese Burger was as expected and tasty. A friend had the Sweet Potato variety and that was well received too. As it was early Sunday evening it was pretty quiet, but found the service and atmosphere great.

I eat in The Advisory nearly every week with my boyfriend, and we are never disappointed! The booze is super cheap and the food is ace. Love the sides (especially the onion rings) and we normally have cheeseburgers but my boyfriend tried the po'boy last time - very good too. Look forward to trying their brunch!

What a disappointment! With all the competition around here you'd expect a burger to be juicy, medium rare and super tasty. This one was dry, grey and had a lumpy texture like it had been boiled. And on top of that, in a brand new place, the staff didn't even bother to ask what I thought of the food. Go to Lucky Chip at the Sebright Arms instead.

Very disappointing! I would have prefer to go to Mc Donald instead! My boyfriend took me out for lunch there today as I fancied a good old burger. We live near London fields and usually get the ones from Netil Market which are probably the best in town but the weather being a bit unpredictable we went to try this one instead as it opened not long ago. Service was good but burgers took a long time to come out. However as we were expecting incredible burgers we were happy to wait. What a disappointment when our dishes arrived. We took 2 portions of chips on the waitress advice but they arrived already cold and dry. The burgers were not much warmer and the beef said to be served medium rare was taugh and very dry too. I guess the only successful moment was our bottled coca cola. Pity the waitress didn't ask how was our lunch I would have been happy to share my point of view with her. Overall that was a great disappointment.
