Early Sunday evening isn’t prime dining time on this bleak street, brightened by sari shops and a clutch of curry houses. A slightly sleeker version of the competition, Amitas is still pretty basic: a well-stocked sweets counter in one half, a relatively spacious and comfortable seating area in the other. A special thali was rather hit and miss for £7.50; we recommend you try something off the specials board instead – one of a range of savoury pooris, perhaps. The lurid ice-cream faluda (with a similar flavour to Turkish Delight and constructed like a sundae) will entertain both children and inner chilren alike. For adults, there’s the rarity of a licensed bar with a good range of spirits, beers and wines.

I was really pleased to see a vegetarian restaurant on a recent visit down green street with my husband. But I was very dissapointed with our experience here and I wouldn't go back again. It was a quiet evening in the restaurant with only a few other diners so we were hoping our food would come quickly as we were hungry after a long day shopping, unfortunately that wasn't the case. Firstly I ordered a soft drink for myself and my husband ordered a glass of sweet lassi. I was eventually brought a can of drink but my husband was never brought his drink and after another 20 minutes of waiting I had to enquire as to where it was and was told I hadn't ordered one for him despite the waiter reading it back to me when he took our order. After another 10 minutes he got his drink and about 50 minutes after ordering we got our food which wasn't even hot. 2 of the dishes we ordered we never received and one that was brought out was incorrect. But after waiting so long we decided not to bother chasing up the missing dishes. The thali we ordered on recommendation of the waiter for us to share contained only a few tiny portions, not enough for one person but cost nearly £10. So by the time we left we were still hungry, £25 down and wondering how they manage to get by with such poor service and bland mediocre food. I expected this to be a well priced restaurant with tasty home cooked style food but it was bland boring and over priced for the quality and portion size.
Finally a vegetarian restaurant I like. Food was amazing, only sampled a few items but they were all great. Will be going back
Time out, you've done badly here- this is an amazing restaurant. Granted, not your glamorous venue, but you clearly ordered the wrong things. Foolish. This place is famous for its chilli paneer- outstanding, and also kachori, potato bhajia, chaat and so on. Outstanding restaurant, great valuem never disappointed
