Balans isn't a bad chain café; however, the food definitely needs a bit of work. I’ve been here for a Christmas set menu dinner which is pretty good value for money - just pass on the turkey (to be fair to them, I’ve never had a roast turkey that wasn’t dry and just generally unappealing). The fish main was better (if a bit salty) as were the pumpkin soup starter and the Christmas pudding dessert. Alright for a tipple and a nibble or two but I don’t think I’d be back in a rush for dinner again.

Good For: small groups, casual drinks or coffee

A new addition to the Clapham scene, in place of the much loved Honky Tonk! It’s a restaurant chain so don’t be fooled by the Balans Soho name…you are most definitely still in the heartland of Clapham. Situated right opposite Clapham Common it is an ideal location for a spot of upmarket brunch or dinner south of the river. I have been for brunch and decided to queue for a table outside which was worth it in the Saturday afternoon heat. I had a quick peak inside which looked quite dark but perhaps this vibe works well for late night cocktail revellers.

Torn between the breakfast and lunch options, I eventually landed on their signature burger and glass of prosecco. My friend had a bloody mary to extinguish a hangover and it was one of the best I had tasted, and I’m not even a fan! The burger came with chips and was the size of my head so the waiter kindly gave me a doggy bag to take the rest home. I am not the sort of person that leaves food so portion sizes are good. Will have to come back for evening drinks.

I'm not sure Clapham needed another place for brunch but it's nice to have variety and Balans really spruces up the place with their large outdoors area decorated with bright purple flowers all around. It's the envy of everyone leaving the tube when they see people sitting having a drink in the sunshine. I went here for brunch one weekend (and what a relief to be able to book a table rather than having to queue!) and the menu was long with something for everyone. Whether you're looking for a hangover queue, something gluten free, something healthy or something that looks more like dinner you'll find it here. I've not tried the evening menu because the prices seem a bit steep so for now this is just another brunch option for me.

Having recently moved to Clapham, I was so happy to find this place on my doorstep. The outside area for drinks is amazing and gives you that British summer vibe. The staff were lovely and kind, I really enjoyed the food too. I will definitely be back.

New addition to the Clapham scene, this Balans has a notably more luxe feel in comparison to the others I have visited. We came here for a drink at the bar on a Saturday night and the place was heaving. Interiors are gorgeous and it had a great buzzing atmosphere. There is a lovely terrace outside which would be a great spot on a sunny day – planning to return for brunch very soon.

I adore Balans - it's fabulous in it's DNA - so to finally have a branch south of the river is ace. The Clapham branch is slightly more refined than the Soho original, with a dolls house feel to the decor. As always, the staff are charming and know the menu well, and will recommend good wine pairings for the food.

The scallop starter was just delicious - served with spiced cauliflower, toasted almonds, and buttermilk foam. Then I foolishly ordered the largest burger in town, aka The Infamous Balans Burger. Stacked on a board with a big old knife through the middle to stop it from falling, although they may as well deliver it in a wheelbarrow. It's huge and I am disappointed to say that it beat me, tasty as it was.

All in all, it's a great place. Not quite as 'razzle dazzle' as the original, but a welcome addition to Clapham's brunch, bistro and boozing scene.
