A London institution. Fabulous for catch ups with friends over breakfast and a coffee (there serve breakfast and breakfast cocktails almost all day at the weekend and you don’t need a reservation!) ideal!

Visited at a very quiet time during mid-afternoon and met with a welcoming smile from a charming young lady.  I chose this place as it has a 5 star hygiene rating and good vegetarian choices.  There isn't a great deal of choice from their "lunch"menu (order up to 5.30 pm!) but the gnocchi and salad my friend ordered and my salmon salad with bread were delicious and the thick crusty bread tasty and fresh.  I wasn't tempted by either the wines or cocktails being somewhat overpriced (a 175 ml glass of rose is £6.20; white and red wines from £4.70;  cocktails £9.50) though I have no doubt they, too, are delicious.   This is one of 7 branches, 2 of them being in Soho, so I'm surprised I've not noticed them.  Have made a mental note to look out their brand in future.

I went to the one on South Kensington for breakfast, as I was going to the Saatchi gallery and, not familiar with the neighbourhood, read a lot of good reviews about it.
I guess it seems to be very ‘laid-back’ for the area, but still seems (to me) a little overdone. The food was good although not as wonderful as the reviews made out to be. I haven’t had the famous burger, but I saw it in the other tables... They do look good!

And it is definitely cheaper than I’d expect for the area.

Balans outside of Westfield London is always a popular spot for after-work dinner and drinks. The girls are so so lovely - really attentive and friendly, and they can even memorise everyone's order and give you individual bills which is so handy when you go in groups. The Balan's burger and thick cut fries are a favourite. And it's great to go to a bar with great atmosphere without being deafened by the music. The velvet seated booth is our favourite spot :)
