Ben's Canteen, 2018

Time Out says

Please note, Ben's Canteen has now closed. Time Out Food editors, MARCH 2020.

The former Willie Gunn wine bar site in Earlsfield has been taken over by the nice chaps behind Ben’s Canteen in Battersea, making this the second branch.  The two adjoining rooms have been given a bright and jolly makeover, with lots of bright white surfaces and Keiller’s marmalade jars on the tables to make it feel a little homely. The menu covers the usual breakfast, sandwich and burger dishes that you might expect of a smart caff, though with a few more unusual dishes such as a variation on the North African shakshuka (baked eggs topped with a tomato and pepper stew, plus spinach in this case). The dishes are done well, from the pert potato chips to the invitingly soft sweet potato chips.

On our visit, our coffees were served tepid, the result of an inexperienced coffee barista. We sent them back, but the replacements were only marginally warmer; more training on the espresso machine was required. Be warned too that the location and prices means that this caff attracts more than its share of pram-pushing mothers of the blond, affluent, and overly confident variety. On our midweek lunch visit we could barely hear ourselves think over the resulting racket, and it wasn’t just the toddlers who were in full voice. Maybe it's better to visit in the evenings.

When you arrive at Ben’s around 11am on Sunday, the place is absolutely packed! (don’t count on getting a table without a prior booking). The place is buzzing and you can tell the people you see are coming here quite regularly.

Many of the dishes on the menu are what you’d find in many other restaurants around the city: avo on sourdough, egg Benedict, fat America style pancakes, but the difference is, here at Ben’s they do them very, very well.

I was a bit disappointed with the look of my salmon and eggs Benedicts on Brixton sourdough when I looked around my companions with the mountains or deep fried chicken and other super looking dishes. But when I bit into my humble sandwich, every single element was of great quality. As there were 12 of us and they were trying hard to bring everything at the same time, as a result my food was no longer hot.

The have a good selection of G & T and other cocktails and mocktails, but their signature drink is the Bloody Mary. Served at three levels of spiciness, they all contain a secret mix (bottles of the drink base are available to buy for home). I really enjoyed my first lunch at Ben’s Canteen, shame it’s so far from home

Lovely people who will make you feel very comfortable there ! Such a good place for brunch and dinner . There it's a long list of amazing drinks to try. Bloody good- bloody Mary's!

Ben's Canteen is such a welcome addition to the Earlsfield high street.  Yes, there are already a few options of places to go but on a Saturday morning they are all busy so the market hasn't been flooded just yet.  The thing I like about Ben's is the casual style with great food.  The staff are always very welcoming and friendly.  I have been here for dinner after work and brunch on the weekend.  Both are great but brunch is definitely my favourite. If you go for dinner the scotch egg starter is amazing, highly recommended. They serve all the usual brunch options but also a few items I haven't tried before including a monthly international specials selection (currently on Spain - AMAZING).  The coffee here is good, they serve milo which as an Australian automatically gives them an extra star.  They didn't have any sugar for coffee when we went, not sure if that is the norm or just a one off.  I will go again this weekend (so selfless!) and update :)

I cam here for brunch on a Saturday morning (please note this is in no way the fault of the restaurant but just a public warning) and the back of the restaurant was FULL of families with their young children/ or babies. There is nothing wrong with this but if you are going to brunch to nurse a hangover if I were you I would ensure that you sit at the front of the restaurant which when we went was child-free.

This place ticks all the boxes regarding what you want for a local brunch place, the coffee was good albeit a bit cold. However I was not blown away by the food hence the 4*, this might be because we did not choose wisely or still in shell shock of being surrounded by so many young children when entering the back of the restaurant. Personally I prefer Mel's accross the street, it might not be as trendy and some people might disagree.

Friendly blend of 25-35 year olds in the evenings and more family atmosphere during the weekday. Four of us had the marinated Chicken harissa, Tuna salsa verde, 38 day aged steak and Fillet of hake with chorizo & chickpea with aioli & chimichurri. All delicious & we didnt even try the famous BC burger. Service helpful. Great casual atmosphere. For Starters try Scotch eggs, spiced Duck nuggets, crispy whitebait or calamari. Puddings DIY doughnuts, Lovely Mess or choc peanut butter brownie.

The 2nd edition of Bens Canteen builds on the solid foundation of great food and a great atmosphere that has made the Wandswoth Canteen my go-to restaurant for brunch or Supper with friends

Had a brilliant meal here tonight on the two courses for £15 menu. Great food, wine and service. The peanut butter brownie in particular was exquisite! Highly recommend a visit!
