The world is put to rights at Oporto, where the pavement tables ring to the sound of animated conversations in Portuguese, and staff are genuinely welcoming and friendly. Lisboa across the road may be more famous, but we prefer Oporto’s crisp layers of pastry with a delicious custard filling – perfectly set and not too sweet. Chicken and cheese rissoles are a deep-fried treat, also not to be missed.

Everyone can come to Porto's. Today we were joined by our local Councillor, a well known actor, a recent Egyptian arrival to the area, some lairy young men, many Portuguese families, older Moroccan men, the usual table of regulars, stall owners, people for whom a coffee and cake is a treat they can afford at Porto's and nowhere else in the area . . . As Golborne gentrifies into hideously expensive blandness Porto's is a sweet refuge where everyone is not just welcome but not excluded because they can't afford a hot drink.
