It's all about the Latin and Mediterranean flavours at this informal spot in the backstreets of Borough. It's open for breakfast and lunch throughout the week, with weekends dedicated to traditional Latin American breakfast and brunch dishes such as huevos rancheros and tlayuda - a Mexican tortilla dish from Oaxaca.
The rest of menu ranges from empanadas, tostadas and tacos to signature salads, traditional Chilean steak sandwiches served in homemade bread and pan-fried baby squid with garlic and fresh herbs. Sandwiches, boxed salads and smaller bites are available to takeaway, too.
A short wine list concentrates on old world bottles from the Med, with a couple of Argentinean reds on offer too. Beers by the bottle include San Miguel, Negra Modelo from Mexico and Cusquena, from Peru. Good coffee, mint tea, fresh juices and smoothies made with natural Greek yoghurt prove popular.

El Vergel, your new place is amazing. The food is fresh wholesome and great value. It's no wonder you are packed out every day! Well done, highly recommend to anyone who is unfamiliar with this unique place!
My first time at El Vergel was amazing!never had before a yummy yummy Chicken enchiladas. ...nice atmosphere colorful location friendly staff...I love it!!!! ill go back soon....
first time at El Vergel I really enjoyed the experience! the chicken enchiladas is the best ever...but roast chicken and chips "S I M P L Y AMAzing"...love the friendly atmosphere... must try....
Yummy! This is a real hidden gem... Wonderful food in the backstreets of SE1, away from hurly burly of Borough Market. My favourites: Churrasco palta with salsa and chilli (S American beef sandwich with avocado, salsa and chilli) and the cherry cheescake. And the daily specials are out of this world. Enjoy! PS - el vergel is open for brunch on Saturday, amazing menu... BUT it's closed in the evening.
I have been going to El Vergel for more than 5 years. Food has been consistently good and staff is friendly. Love the new bigger restaurant. Toilets are always clean which is a plus!
A third of paint of mango juice for 2.60 is robbery. The guacamole was not to a good standard and the service was slow and inexperienced. Not to mention the waitress, who wouldn't speak Spanish with me dropped my sandwich right next to me and didn't offer anything for the wait! Not very good, quite disappointing to be honest. A disappointed Chilean in London
