Flamingo is one of London’s few Ethiopian restaurants and it includes a fully-licensed bar and dining room. An African band provides the entertainment while you work your way through a menu of traditional dishes. You can try the national dish - a hot pepper and spice stew called ‘Wot’ – with Ethiopian unleavened bread injera. If you’re not a fan of the hot food, try milder dishes like alicha curry, all washed down with Ethiopian coffee. Injera bread is also sold to take away.

I ate at this atmospheric little restaurant with my husband and son yesterday - an evening of lovely surprises. I knew nothing about Ethiopian food but the amused waitress was full of advice. I had been a bit diffident about  eating with fingers - using the flat injera bread - but it just seemed to come naturally. The hot Wot and milder Alicha, together with Ethiopian salads and vegetables, came on a vast round sharing injera bread. We loved it all, and the excellent Ethiopian beer was the perfect accompaniment. The waitress looked a bit surprised when we asked for Ethiopian coffee, and warned us it would take a while, which it did - starting with roasting the coffee beans! - but boy was it worth waiting for. Possibly the best coffee I've ever had, and presented sumptuously on a carved wooden tray. The bill was embarrassingly small (we booked on a Tastecard) and I had to add a 20% tip to make it anything like reasonable. Next time (and there will be lots of next times) I will be happy to pay full whack.
