Funchal Bakery

More than just a bakery, Funchal is a sandwich bar, deli and informal meeting place for the area’s Portuguese community. Get a warm chicken coxinha (like an oversized croquette) to take away, or have a seat and soak up the hectic family atmosphere; you can also pick up some Portuguese wine or preserved fish to cook at home. Our custard tart was good, though the base could have been crisper.
