I was looking forward to a sweet treat from Gail's following a delicious lunch at Dirty Burger.

This branch of the popular bakery was buzzing with the lunchtime crowd. The layout is quite poor, with the takeaway baked goods right in the gangway of all the people going to and from their tables. It was unclear whether you grabbed your own or were served, but the staff were friendly when asked.

I chose a mini sour cherry and chocolate cake that looked yummy - at £3+ for a small takeaway snack I was expecting something delicious and perhaps a little different. I carried it carefully back to the office, anticipating my treat.

What a disappointment! Slightly burnt on the underside and with little to no hint of sour cherry, it was unfortunately reminiscent of a cheap chocolate chip cake from a supermarket. It did improve towards the middle, and had a nice light texture, but throughout there was no real sense of its sour-cherry USP.

I have had good experiences with other branches of Gail's for brunch, so I am likely to return - but I'd think twice before trying another one of their cakes.
