Once home to a genuine local boozer, this site was taken over in 2011 and swiftly given a makeover aligning it a little better with its more salubrious neighbours: mostly pastel-coloured cottages and Victorian townhouses.

They did a good job with a fairly sizeable space, retaining the finer features (dimpled glass windows, a U-shaped mahogany bar) while adding other decorative touches (big rugs, antlers adorned with fedoras and scarves, candlelit tables unencumbered by tablecloths, Punch magazine wallpaper in a separate snug).

It's proper gastropub fare on the food menu – think roast duck breast with potato gratin, hispi cabbage and red wine jus, baked trout with roast fennel, rocket and a lemon oil dressing, or burgers made with wagyu beef. Craft beer is available on draught.

Absolutely outrageous prices. £6 for a pint of Peroni. More than I've ever paid anywhere before, even in central London, and Peroni is my pint of choice. It's £6 for other lagers too. Shameful

Awful service and attitude. We went to the Hillgate for drinks and dinner last night and were really unimpressed with the service.

We ordered two medium rare steaks, they came out far from medium rare, told the waitress she agreed, then came back with them saying she'd been told they were medium rare. The manager came over, very rudely said that they were medium rare, I pointed out that they weren't as they were barely even pink, I asked if that was medium rare then what was medium and what was well done. He sarcastically said "what do you want me to do describe it, well it would be more cooked"

They didn't want to do us any more food so instead bought the money back put it on the table and walked off without a word. Haven't had such bad service in a long time. It was late and we had to go and find somewhere else for dinner.
