Time Out says

4 out of 5 stars

Like so many exotically-named destinations on the DLR, Island Gardens doesn't generally live up to the romance of its name. But venture amongst its grey towerblocks and you'll find a patch of joy in Kinkao, an old school Thai restaurant that's well worth a trip to this slightly nothingy patch of Thames-side real estate.

Its terrace has gorgeous views over the Thames to Greenwich, and even if you're sitting inside on a chilly night, you can enjoy the glimmer of the water through its abundant floor-to-ceiling windows. Inside the restaurant is a bubbling stream that's full of giant koi fish (a sign politely asks guests not to linger too long next to it, doubtless lest a bustling waiter accidentally elbows them into it) while richly patterned wood carvings depict families of placid elephants. In short, it's a treat place, a take-the-kids place, but one that's as affordably priced as any unambitious takeaway you might find lurking on your nearest high street.

Its mixed starters came piled high on an elaborate platter, decked out with vegetables tortuously carved into flowers. Slightly naff? Yes! Lovely? Also yes! And the spring rolls and satay sticks it contains are deliciously fresh and crisp, turned out with speed by a kitchen that runs with impressive, ever-smiling efficiency.

What followed was just as enjoyable: the pad kee mao (or drunken noodles) were richly flavoured and moreish, slick with spicy-sour sauce. And the massaman curry was aromatic, thick with crushed peanuts and entirely delicious, the kind of dish you keep eating long after your mind and body are conspiring to scream 'stop!'.

The room was packed with good-humoured crowds sipping pints of the Singha or Brewdog beers on tap, or sipping dayglo brite cocktails (order at your own risk).

The vibe A welcoming Thai restaurant with elaborate decor and showstopping views over the Thames.

The food Generous portions of deliciously fresh Thai classics.

The drink Sink a Thai beer or two, or explore the substantial cocktail menu.

Time Out tip This place is both wheelchair and pushchair accessible, making it great for a full family trip.
