Konditor & Cook

Most customers seem to take their order and head back to the office, but a seat at this pleasant City branch of Konditor & Cook allows a peep at the architectural intricacies of its landmark location. The menu invariably features a hearty salad, a few pizzas and tarts, and jacket potatoes. Inventive soups such as courgette with lime show a foodie sensibility many lunch-spots sadly lack. Risotto is served from hot trays behind the counter; smoked haddock with saffron and serrano ham was very fishy, our server advised, so we opted for a thai veg curry laden with chickpeas for protein. A rhubarb and custard muffin wrapped in brown paper did not live up to the usual high standard of the cakes.

Lunches at Konditor & Cook are a treat: both delicious and great value for money their deli's are my go-to lunch destination on weekdays when I've left home in the morning without planning ahead. Not only are their brownies and cupcakes (for which they are quite legendary around the city) sinfully good, but to balance out the sweetness they also serve up a healthy range of daily salads, alongside quiche, hot soup, jacket potatoes and sandwiches.

With four to six salads to choose from I usually opt for a salad box with roast salmon and my two favourite salad offerings: the sweet potato and rocket, and roast aubergine and pomegranate. One of the things I love about the deli is that their salads are always so satisfying and filling: the kale, green apple and walnut salad is also highly recommended!

While Aldgate's Konditor & Cook has more seating, I'm also a fan of Konditor & Cook's Southbank Deli. A five-minute walk from Waterloo station its just around the corner from the company's own cake school. For a lunch that's both naughty and nice, its definitely warrants a visit - and while you're in their make sure you pick up one of their freshly-baked loaves and an apple crumble tart to take home!

Konditor & Cook is obviously known for its delicious hot chocolates and cakes, but they serve amazing lunches as well. It is almost like a little secret and sometimes I would take my friends there for lunch and they are all impressed by how big the portions are and how fresh and healthy the food is. Lasagna is delicious, so is their jacket potatoe. For dessert, go for either their to-die for brownies or Chocolate Noisette Cake which is absolutely my favourite.

I love K&C. From the first bite of the most amazing apple strudel I had at the Broadway market few years back, I’ve a been a addicted to these cakes ever since. You can’t go wrong with K&C, you can buy a cake with your eyes closed and be sure that it will be divine! One of my favourite is the Almost St Clemens which is nutty and zesty and super moist, which makes it stay fresh until the next day. The show stopper is the pecan caramel brownie though. It has the perfect combination of textures: crumbly on the outside, gooey on the inside, crunchy from the caramel and nuts throughout. Delicious! And the staff is always so friendly and skilful at suggesting more products. You don’t even notice when you’ll be leaving with a bag full of cakes, but not with an empty pocket as the prices are very reasonable. This branch also serves healthy lunches.
