Given that Open Kitchen is the restaurant where students from the London City Hospitality Centre (part of Hackney Community College) practise their skills on paying punters, you’d be forgiven for allowing it a bit of leeway with standards.
However, our recent meal here was very good, and the prices are irresistable – starters £3.50, mains £6, desserts £3. We enjoyed crisp fishcakes with a chilli-laced chutney-style dip and then roast beef with trimmings.
Service was personable and willing, there’s a good wine list and the space itself, which benefited from a recent refurbishment, is bright, airy and contemporary.
Opening hours are limited and staffing levels do vary, so make sure you book ahead. One place we’re happy to be called guinea pigs.

Our team had an AMAZING time at Open Kitchen! We decided to partake in a cooking class as part of our team bonding event. All of the staff and chefs were extremely nice, super fun and really showed us around the kitchen. This was by far one of the best team events we've ever done and we're so thankful to Open Kitchen for making that possible. David and Amira were extremely helpful throughout the whole process. I would definitely recommend Open Kitchen to anyone and everyone! Thanks again! :)
Having worked in 4 star, rosette standard hospitality for seven years I was very impressed with the quality of the trainees and overall service and food at open kitchen. We were well attended to and the food was fantastic along with the atmosphere of the restaurant. The manager was very helpful, friendly and led his team well. I would recommend this restaurant to couples and friends.
I have heard about the delicious food of this restaurant and hence decided to drive to the open kitchen for lunch today. I have to clarify that the rating is unrelated to the food provided to the kitchen as I unfortunately hadn't had the pleasure to try the food there as it was close for lunch today for special function. There was NO notice on the door/reception area to indicate the kitchen was closed for event. No reception staff in front, although there was staff around but i was genuinely ignored. As this is the first time i have been to this restaurant, I thought perhaps this is one of those 'find your own seat' restaurant as the atmosphere looks pretty relax, so with my blankly look i walked into the restaurant and after a confusing minutes, finally was told by a staff that the restaurant is close. No other explanation, no information about when is it open again, well at least not until I specifically turn around and asked for it. The atmosphere of the restaurant is nice and i am sure it is a great restaurant, however, i feel that the service can be improved, even just a simple notice on the door could be helpful or with staff being a little more proactive. I appreciate that this is a busy day and sometimes this can be difficult. I may try to pop in again if I get a chance in the future and try my luck to see whether I can get some of those delicious food that i have heard about.
I had my first pop up restaurant at the open kitchen bar & restaurant last weekend; it was amazing! I had 2 kitchen staff, the manager (David N.) and 2 waiters to work along with me. They acted like real professionasl for the smothest service ever. They helped me from the begining until the end, I couldn't be more happy. Best service, best ambiance, best staff...i definitely recommend them!!!
We had our wedding party at Open Kitchen in May. The service was impeccable, we had around 100 guests but the students gave a personal service to everyone- taking coats when people arrived and serving drinks to tables, as well as at the bar. We decided on Egyptian cuisine and the trainee chefs prepared a buffet which was part vegetarian and part meat. I had a huge number of messages the following day all commenting on how good the food was. I could not fault it. The sun also came out on that particular evening and Amira, the Head Chef decided to have an impromptu BBQ in the graden area for some of the kebabs and meat dishes. The location is also great and many of our guests went out after the party ended. If you want to hold an event, large or small, have dinner with friends, or a romantic dinner for two, go to Open Kitchen. You won't be disappointed.
