Stuck on a rather unpromising stretch of Turnpike Lane, and with a rather dated interior, Penang Satay House isn't immediately appetising. But this unpretentious Malaysian restaurant is what budget eating is all about: good grub at great prices. Not a single dish disappointed on our last visit, with orange chicken and melt-in-the-mouth beef rendang among the highlights. Every element of the cooking showed attention to detail, from the mixed fried rice to the piquant peanut sauce, and portions were generous enough to make chomping our way through the £14.50 set menu a pleasurable struggle. Staff were welcoming and efficient; even thought the place was busy, we were encouraged to linger over a glass or two of highly drinkable house wine.

I've never had vegan food before let alone heard of Chinese vegan food. This place has such a homely feel to it, you know the food will be "just like how mama makes it". I went in with an open mind and if I wasn't told it was vegan, I would never have guessed the dishes were lacking in meat. Staff were friendly and helpful. This place is worth a try if you're in the area. It's step free access, but unfortunately no accessible toilets.

This is a basic restaurant with fantastic food and great staff, both I and my family have been going here for nearly 20 years, despite now living in Hertfordshire. The cosmopolitan atmosphere and warm friendly reception makes it a great night out, it's not posh but it certainly isn't tacky or seedy. If you like Indian and Chinese, you'll love this place!

This little unassuming place was incredibly good value and nice food. Very authentic helpful staff and quick, which was great because we were hungry. Nasi goreng for £3.30, where in London can you find that! Get the Beef Rendang, excellent!
