True to the expansive line of chains, a familiar atmosphere as soon as you step into the restaurant. The staff were friendly and service swift however, I can’t help but wonder why we spend more money at a pizza express than an independent restaurant or a smaller more artesian pizzeria. Perhaps, this chain does not offer the value for money we were once lured into believing. With that being said, their student discount on Monday and Tuesdays is worth it.

This particular branch of Pizza Express has recently had a makeover. Situated within a world heritage site in the heart of Greenwich the warm blue and brown tones in the décor are designed to compliment the tradition design of the building and the walls are adorned with photographs of artists performing live, including Amy Winehouse who had previously sang at the Soho Jazz club branch of Pizza Express.

The food was really delicious and the menu featured some new dishes for the autumn/winter. I ate the Pollo pesto which is a chicken and mushroom pasta with an added crunch of red onion in a pesto sauce. I would have expected it to arrive hotter than it did but it was still very flavoursome.

The highlight of the evening was the added feature of a live performer. Greenwich is one of a handful of branches that are putting on free live music for their diners on a Thursday evening and the acts are all up and coming artists.

We had a performance from Darren Campbell who was great, he played a number of well known songs and really blended in with the atmosphere without being over the top. It was nice to have live singing in such a small setting and the room wasn’t full so it felt intimate and cosy. Would probably make a great first date for somewhere relaxing with an added something special!
