With Pizza Express, diners enter with sensible expectations of what they will get: cheap and cheerful mediocre renditions of pizza. That’s it. In this particular Southbank location of Pizza Express, you’ll get just that, but be warned – this is a location best avoided unless strictly necessary. This is an expansive, cavernous venue that is obviously geared towards families and (given the area) tourists. As soon as you walk through the door, there is an area parked with dozens of buggies and enough children running around that it might set your nerves on end if you’re expecting a quiet lunch with a friend or partner. But it’s obviously ideal if you’re in a large group with young children. The service is swift and friendly and food comes out of the kitchen post-haste, making it ideal for a fast lunch. Our server was very accommodating, bringing over two birthday cakes following our meal and setting out plates and forks for everyone, then packing up the cake for us to take home. Despite this, the lack of natural light and the din of screaming children will have you wishing you went to a less busy location. I also had an altercation with a ramekin of garlicky dough ball sauce that was dropped by a server and splattered up my leg. Given the ubiquitous presence of the chain, if you’re fixated on having a pizza, I’d keep walking and track down a quieter venue.
