This historic Highgate hostelry is ambitious when it comes to alfresco drinking and dining – and able to be flexible, with an intimate, secluded courtyard at the back and a larger area facing the road at the front. They run open-air grills for ordinary punters on special occasions – for the Royal Wedding, for instance, there were burgers, pork buns, merguez sausage baguettes and chips done in the outside fryer, all washed down with one of four changing ales. Every so often, a quirky mobile catering van (such as Big Apple Hotdogs) will park up at the site – follow their tweets (@redlionandsun) for advance notice.

I had Steak & my partner had Burger and they were both that disgusting that the dog ended up eating it all.
I asked for the steak to be well rested, yet when it arrived it looks like a swimming pool of scum on top of the slab of horrible meat, when I told the people there about it and asked why there was blood pouring out everywhere when I asked for it to be medium no blood and well rested however putting this aside the steak was one of the worst steaks I have ever eaten I had two bites and wish I never had that! The wine was boring (No depth etc) for £7.50 a glass I expected a little bit better than £2 tasting wine! And to typify it nobody at all gave a dam when I raised any problems they ignored it all and was just interested in taking my cash, £55 may I add and we now feel like we are going to be sick!!!
The whole place felt like a football hooligan time pub rather than somewhere that you would go to eat.
On a slightly positive note My partner had the carrot/hash and she said that was ok.
I feel violated after first reviewing this place and seeing that it was in the top 50 Gastro pubs around, not sure how they are rating maybe they are hiring Stevie Wonder for his visual rating...
Guaranteed fabulous food, friendly service, lovely atmosphere in both summer and winter and great value makes this the go-to place to eat in Highgate.
Went for a Sunday roast and the food was brilliant! Lovely outside area and probably the best pub lunch I have had in Highgate. The food was a little cold but the pub was extremely busy. Very friendly staff too which always helps!
By far the best Sunday Lunch I have had in years, the quality of the food and the service is outstanding. Try and secure a seat in the outdoor area - perfect Sunday afternoon in the sun!
One of my favourite pubs. Great place for date night, a friends get together - with or without the family. Great selection of wines and I love the oysters! Country feel in the city.
Tasty, tasty, tasty! Not cheap, but well worth the pennies. Best pub burger in North London. Staff are just lovely and best of all dogs are welcome
Always a pleasure eating here, I've tried the peppercorn steak, beef and pork roast and burger and the portions are good and the chips are very good too. Other things I have tried have been consistent too.
