Spaghetti House has had a presence on London's restaurant scene since 1955 and this Sicilian Avenue branch in Bloomsbury benefits from outside tables for al fresco dining. The menu features plenty of stone-baked pizzas and pastas - linguine, tagliatelle and spaghetti, of course - as well as dishes such as salmon with pesto and chicken Caesar salad.

There’s a branch of Spaghetti House right outside my office, and it’s often the go-to for lunch meetings. The food here is pretty delicious, pretty expensive and not terribly filling.

I’ve had the linguine gaberonie e zucchini (basically pasta with prawns in a white wine and garlic sauce) and the panciotti in guazzetto (pasta scallops, crab and prawns in a white wine and garlic sauce – apparently I’m not a very adventurous eater). Both were absolutely delicious and very flavourful. There just wasn’t very much of it. Given that it was pasta, I thought I’d be quite full afterwards, but actually felt a bit peckish still. The plates start at £12-15, which in my opinion, should be filling so that you’re not ordering more. But then, hey, if work’s paying!

Have to say though, despite not feeling filled the staff are incredibly friendly and attentive! Both times I’ve been, they’ve cracked jokes with us, were very smile-y and just, in general, nice!

We’ve just come back from Sicily and wanted the holiday mood to last until the end of the weekend.

And since Spaghetti House had a pretty good offer on the occasion of their 60th birthday, we decided to give it a try. The cheerful ‘buongiorno’ on the entrance set the mood for the entire afternoon. For the entire 2 hours we felt as we’d never left Italy. Most of the staff are Italians, so the atmosphere is buzzy, sometimes loud, occasionally you can hear someone sing.

The aubergine Caponata served in a cute jar alongside sour dough bread on a wooden board was a million times better than the one we had a chance to try in Sicily. And that was only a beginning of a feast we hadn’t expected. Both the pasta Bolognese and Napolitana were examples of  good Italian home cooking - simple, but full of flavours and generous. But don’t stop at the mains.

Both the Roasted Pear Ricotta Cheesecake and the Double Amaretto Ice Cream with a shot of Amaretto we delicious. If you’re lucky, you may also get a free shot of Limoncello when you ask for your bill. Salute!

I have never in my life had such a bad dining experience. We were left waiting at the door when we arrived for 10 minutes while waiters were asking us to move out of there way. Once they acknowledged our presence we asked for a table for 3 and they led us to a table of 2 which meant we had to wait longer for a table to be cleaned. We waited 20 minutes before our drink order was taken and of course this is only because we had been attempting to get someones attention for 10 of those minutes. When our food arrived they had got the wrong order for me a pizza covered in meat, the waiter informed me that they just had the wrong table and he would go and find my food. 5 minutes later the waiter had returned and it was clear the meat had simply been scraped from the pizza and sprinkled with parmesan, this was was confirmed when my brother saw and tasted the parma ham which they had forgotten to discard. I am a vegetarian and found this solution extremely insulting, I could forgive that they got my order wrong mistakes happen and I would have been more than happy to wait while they cooked me some more food but to do this was disgusting. The waiter blamed the chef and eventually had him make me a new pizza, but they didn't seem too bothered and was never given a proper apology. The food for all of us was of a very poor standard, the spaghetti was very dry and my food was tasteless. The service was the most appaulling I have ever come across and I shall never return and encourage others looking for a pleasant experience or friendly atmosphere not to go to this awful restaurant.
