An eye-catching summer street-food cart fronts the tall, sleek glass exterior of Suda, creating some character in what is an otherwise generic shopping-centre/café space. There’s also a pretty display of victoria sponge cakes and British tea-time classics, helping to lure in footsore Covent Garden shoppers and sightseers.

Navigate carefully through the menu (dried shrimps and oyster sauce are both found in the ‘vegetarian’ section) and you’ll discover some interesting Thai dishes. To start, braised duck wrapped in steamed rice sheets arrived as bite-sized portions sitting in a sweet chilli dip. Mains include various types of som tam (green papaya salad) with a choice of grilled meat.

The classic street-food dish gai yang (barbecued chicken) worked well with the shreds of well-pounded green papaya soaking up the tangy lime and chilli dressing. But other dishes were as westernised and contemporary as the venue itself. Beef penang, for instance, turned out to be a slab of overcooked beef fillet in a shallow dish of albeit rich and fragrant curry drizzled with coconut milk. Service was kindly yet not the most attentive.

The exterior of this restaurant in the heart of Covent Garden doesn't prepare you for the very chic and modern interiors. Staff are friendly and attentive. This is however, one of the only Thai restaurants i've ever been to where the mains are far better than the starters. I'd actually recommend skipping starters altogether and ordering an array of mains to share. The beef brisket panang and King Prawn pad thai were stand out dishes, generous portions and the flavour was excellent. Worth visiting with a group.


Modern and sleek, relaxed atmosphere kind of place with very convenient location. 

Affordable prices and pad thai I had was absolutely d-eeeeelicious! People that have been to Thailand agree that the food at Suda Thai is very authentic. Great find!


Their thai food was "aiighhht", nothing special. I thought it would be a place that would serve impressive food, but just mediocre. I think their food does not live up to their price tag. I think my green curry taste from a street vendor taste better than Suda. I suppose you don't go there for the food but you go there for the atmosphere. 


Very elegant venue, the food was good but no amazing but even so it was a very pleasant evening and meal.

I will add it to my pre-theater meal list.

I took my date here last Saturday night, we both had a half decent cocktails, but they were full of ice which wasn't a great start. It was another 45 minutes before the waiter came back and took our food order. As it was getting late we asked for the starters and mains to arrive together. The starters came... the calamari was tasteless and barely warm, the Thai fish and prawn lollipops was a tasteless pink far, so going downhill. It was another 30 minutes before the mains made an appearance, and that was only after we had to ask the waiter where they were...the waiter said it was a 'miscommunication' - ah, but it wasn't, he just forgot. My date ordered a beef Thai green curry, but it was tepid and the meat was mainly gristle, and he couldn't eat it. I ordered crispy sea bass fillet topped with sweet chilli sauce - but what i was served wasn't even close. Wait for it...there was no fillet, it was small pieces of battered fish, not crispy, just battered...And it wasn't sea bass, maybe the chef would have liked it to be sea bass, but it was at best, Pollock. That's right, Pollock, that was bathed in some fluorescent red sauce that could have been... well, anything. And don't get me started on the 'accompaniment'. This could only be described as a nebulous discus shaped green vegetable thing, that hoped to be something else. Both my date and I couldn't even begin to decipher what it was. And to top it all off, the rice was burnt. - so burnt, no amount of dressing with fried onions could hide the taste. It takes some effort from the Suda chef to cook the fish and vegetable of a main course and for the end result to be a 'tepid tastelessness'. So there we were, both of us, not able to eat anything off our plates. So far, so going downhill at a breakneck speed. I told the waiter I wasn't happy AT ALL!! and wasn't paying. It took a 20 minute conversation between him and the manager (who didn't even come over to find out what was wrong) to decide how much they were prepared to deduct and they only agreed after i had to approach them to tell them how Royally pi**ed off we were. I don't know Suda get away with it, and i should have known better when i realised there were no Thai people eating there. Time Out readers: Stay away from Suda, go to Busaba Eathai around the corner, where at least you're guaranteed to get some decent food, and not leave indigestion.

Great Restaurant. If those of you have been to Thailand and have relished the authentic food ever since - Suda is the place to dine. Its not run of the mill thai and spicing is close to perfection. They make all the base suaces themselves (not from a packet) which may have been the issue with the reviewer below my comment. Service is amicable and polite. Its not fine dining, and staff are always approachable. My seventh visit since November 2012!

without a doubt the worst meal i have eaten in London, you know when you walk in a place, look at the menu and think, i should leave. massively overpriced crappy thai food. Every thai i have ever been in is better than this. avoid! thannnnnnnnnnnnnkkkkkkkkks

Meal at Suda was delicious and was very happy UNTIL waitress returned to our table (after spending 10 mins scrutinising our bill with a calculator) demanding 33p for a tip we'd apparently underpaid! This ruined the whole night - we were a big group spending £200 - we paid our bill in full. Yeah we might have been a measly 33p short on the DISCRETIONARY service due to the card/cash combo of group dynamics. Bears no resemblance to the Thai hospitality I would expect! Massive #service fail.

Shocking service - we waited an hour between starters and mains and when the main came out it was cold. They gave me just over £4 off the bill - not sure why the bothered. I won't be going back

Okay food, nothing special, but shocking service! Was there 3.5 hrs in total and we were starving by the time the mains came out. Of which some of them came out cold. They did reheat them pretty quickly. They also gave alcoholic drinks to muslim members of the group. That didnt go down too well, and the management offered nothing as recompense despite it being all their fault. Would i go there again? only if i have 5 hours to kill and am not that hungry

My fiancee and I visited SUDA, as we have recently just got back from travelling around Thailand for 3 months and were feeling nostalgic! What SUDA does best is capture the authenticity of the Thai cuisine and create that friendly, helpful and genuinely courteous vibe that we experienced all around Thailand. The food was reasonably priced (not as cheap as Thailand, but good for London prices!) and the icing on the cake were the cocktails (I highly recommend the rum-based SUDA Passion). So if like us, you want to find that little slice of Thailand in the busy english capital, head to SUDA - you wont be disappointed.

Went here for dinner with my partner a couple of weeks ago. Nice looking place in a pleasant and quieter part of Covent Garden. Food was good, but not as good as it could be. Very annoyed that every table in the restaurant had an offer displayed to get a glass of champagne for £3.00 if you ordered certain fish dishes (which we intended to do) - but on asking the waitress we were this offer wasnt valid at the weekend. Nothing to say that on the flyer and they were on every single table. To my mind you should offer the customer the deal as a gesture - but we were not so lucky. Staff seemed more interested in cogregating around the bar area chatting and not doing much else. Seemed reasonably popular as the evening went on but wont be going back - not terrible but just a little lacking in atmosphere. Stick to Busabai for outstanding Thai food and excellent service for around the same price.

Skimping on ingredients, poorly prepared. Beef salad was 4 limp leaves of little gem, one cherry tomato, shredded onion. No coriander and nothing special sauce. Went for an early supper, not busy but rude and inattentive staff. One waitress started taking our order, when my father enquired if a dish had sugar (diabetic) and was informed it did, while he paused to choose again, the waitress left without a word to go take another tables order. Incredible.

We spent less than an hour in this unappetising place - loud music, flavourless food, missing half the ingredients stated on the (food-splattered) menu, perfunctory service, over-priced drinks and no toilet roll. 2 veggie mains, one side dish and one juice for £30. I suggest you give this a miss and go to one of the excellent Busaba Eatthai branches insted.

I had the pleasure of stumbling across this amazing restaurant last night. The staff were so pleasant and we were treated like we were at a Michelin star. The customer service, definitely outweighed many Michelin stars I have been to. The food was amazing, the infusion of Thai with a slight contemporary twist left me and my friend bedazzled. We ordered the calamari and spare rib side dishes and the beef stir fry and red duck curry. The food was absolutely amazing. It is probably the best casual dining I have experienced in London in the last few years. The pricing of the food pays the excellent food and service no justice! We paid approx £30 for 2courses and drinks. Definite bargain. Will be going back- real soon!

I particularly went to Suda to taste the Som Tam salad having read your review. I ordered a beef salad under the heading of Som Tam Bar to be presented with some slices of beef and green salad leaves, when I asked the waiter if we had received the wrong dish he said it didn't come with papaya. I don't understand how they can have a section of the menu headed Som tam and then serve completlet different dishes. I was very disappointed. Luckily Som Tam is available at Thai 100 in Stamford Brook which I Suggest you try

I went for dinner with my husband tonite, and it was simply delicious. I was looking for an interesting night out uptown. After drinks at the Oxo Tower, we walked along the Southbank up to Covent Garden. I found this restaurant through a different site and came highly recommended. As someone who has never been to Thailand, I find the timeout review a bit over the top. I wanted a nice interesting, memorable evening, and this met my expectations. The restaurant is in a very smart part of town, the staff were very welcoming to us and we were seated quickly. You can check their website for the menu, we had starters of calamari and satay chicken, and mains - beef salad and prawn tempura. The food was served very quickly, and the favours were bursting with life and layers of different flavours. Satay chicken had hints of coconut, the tempura batter on the fish was melt in the mouth; light and crispy. And my beef salad was an experience - chilli, lime juice, coriander, med/rare melting beef and crisp salad leaves. Amazing! Unfortunately we didn't have time for dessert, but the next time I go back, I will be having the banana fritters with sesame seeds. A very enjoyable night, 2 people 2 courses plus drinks £30. I really enjoyed the decor and the table settings, however my one suggestion is to get a table with the padded chairs. I had a very numb bum, after sitting on a wooden stool for 45mins.

We tried Suda two nights before opening. The food was delicious and the staff was very friendly. The ambience is casual but sophisticated right in the heart of Covent Garden. I highly recommend giving it a try.
