Please note, The Athenian has now closed at this location. However, the street-food chain has opened its first permanent branch in White City. Time Out Food editors, AUGUST 2019.

Of the many cultural contributions to modern life invented by Greece – democracy, philosophy, a government that racks up national debt like smartphone users do Pokémon – kebabs are right up there. And thanks to this new Greek mini-chain, you can now snaffle them up like you’re holidaying in Athens. The stall in Elephant and Castle’s answer to Boxpark – yes, there is such a thing, get over it – has a clean white-tiled interior peppered with Greek paraphernalia (bunches of Hellenic mountain herbs sitting in containers, forks in tin cans strewn with Greek writing).

On a busy day the queue stretches out of the door and, judging by the ingredients, you can see why. Wraps are made with the vastly superior Greek rather than Cypriot pitta (circular rather than oval, fluffy rather than unleavened) and come with a sprinkling of oregano-flecked chips inside, plus a choice of tzatziki, tyrokafteri (spicy feta dip) or creamy souvlaki sauce. Downsides? Multi-tasking didn’t seem to be the staff’s forte. Also, the wraps were slightly underfilled for our liking. However, they do only cost £5 a pop (with extra fillings available for £1.50). At that price, even members of the Greek government could afford lunch there.

Did not have high expectations, thought it’s a hipster joint. But the gyro sandwich knocked it out of the park. Meat was perfectly cooked, really nice sauce (Athenian sauce). The fries and the paprika really are the cherry on top.

Oh my goodness! Where have I been all this time??

I finally laid my beady eyes on the souvlaki these guys make and my oh my what a sight !!

Firstly I'd heard way too much about them! It had reached a point where I could practically congure up the flavours in my mouth!!! Well now I can attest to their greatness! They fill the wrap with seasoned chips,a little salad and meats and sauces of your choice. It's a typical Greek dish and it is to die for!! I think I gobbled it up in under 10 minutes... the best part about all of this is that they are extremely reasonable in price.. under 6 quid gets you your meal...You can amp it up with double and even triple meat fillings and you're still under the £10 margin... couldn't recommend it enough... it's mouthwatergeringly fantastic!!!!

Authentic and delicious! The pork and halloumi wrap is incredible, order with a side of feta chips or Tyrokafteri dip and pitta.

A flavorful, filling and cheap authentic Greek eatery!

Having grown up in Greece, I am a h-uge fan of Greek food and especially the traditional on-the-go meal that is the pita gyros. Since having moved to London, now 10 years ago, I have struggled to find anywhere that offered something of the same authentic quality; that is until I visited The Athenian. With pop-ups in both Box Park and Elephant & Castle's Artworks, The Athenian supplies the masses with incredibly flavorful food - succulent meat, fresh salad, a range of traditional dips all wrapped in the fluffiest of Greek pita breads - at more than affordable prices (that is for London standards anyhow!). You can order a more modern twist on the classic, adding Arabic hummus or Cypriot halloumi to the mix, but I cannot recommend a straight-up simple chicken or pork-skewer wrap with tzatziki with a side of oregano-topped chips, enough!

With all that I also got to practice my rusty Greek much to the amusement, surprise and visible appreciation of the family-orientated staff.

So whether you are looking for a quick, easy, affordable and filling lunch or dinner place for yourself, friends or colleagues, I cannot recommend The Athenian enough!

Kali Orexi! Enjoy your meal!

I really enjoy Greek food and struggle to find a good restaurant for great value.

This is finally in a stall that I find what I was looking for.

There is always a huge queue if you don’t manage to go there before 1pm, but it worth it. This is really cheap and really good.

Take it in a box it is much easier to eat and you can put a bit of the 3 sauces they propose, all of them really good.

I usually go find then at Fenchurch street station on Wednesday or Thursday, but they are also at boxpark and a few different location you can find on their website.
