Time Out says

3 out of 5 stars

Family-friendly café focusing on simple brunches, lunches and coffee.

Given that Nunhead Green has a pub on each of its four corners, it really shouldn’t have taken this long for someone in the area to open somewhere decent to nurse a hangover. In this simple role, at least, The Habit succeeds: the welcome is warm, the coffee from nearby Old Spike Roastery is good and strong, and the brightly decorated space lends itself well to rustling through the Sunday supplements.

But while The Habit rejoices in decorative detail – hand-stamped napkins; little bunches of flowers from the local florist – for better or worse, the menu is far less fussy. You’ll find no waffly promises of provenance here. Which would be fine, of course, if only it translated to flawless food. The fry-up (not the Full English, not the house brunch – the ‘fry-up’) was solid, but a nine-quid breakfast really ought to come with more than one egg and something a little more refined than from-a-tin beans.

Families looking for some quick ballast may appreciate the simplicity, but others (and anyone who’s been to nearby brunch benchmark Pedler) may feel standards could be higher.

Perfect spot for a lazy weekend brunch, so happy to have found somewhere so amazing so local!

Brilliant fresh and seasonal food produced by the friendliest locals you'd ever wish to meet. So proud to have this place on my doorstep.

Best local restaurant run by two local guys who know your name and remember you. They manage to make everyone feel special and you get a vibe of the old local friendly cafes where everyone knows each other with real community. It is like the old times and the food is excellent

Beautiful new spot in Nunhead with a great atmosphere. Staff were friendly and attentive. Excellent food from a concise yet varied menu that does not try to overwhelm you. Will be going back!

Delicious food made using great local produce. Friendly service and a warm atmosphere. Recommended!

This is a great family friendly cafe, but a couple of days a week serve a great menu of delicious well cooked food at an extremely reasonable price. Pay it a visit you won't be disappointed.

Always welcomed by friendly staff who show genuine enthusiasm. The food is wholesome and portions generous... plus the menu is constantly changing. Love this place

The perfect local bistro, serving fantastic coffee from Old spike, great brunch options, especially the Fry up! It then turns into a fantastic restaurant on Friday and Saturday evenings, with a monthly changing small plates menu. defiantly worth a visit.

Amazing food, atmosphere and staff. I would and do recommend it to everyone.

Such friendly, helpful staff! The food is always delicious and definite value for money. It has become a firm favourite and the first place my friends and I think of meeting up for a meal locally

Great local bistro run by local boy Dan. Top food for breakfast, lunch and dinner

A wonderfully friendly atmosphere, incredible food and such a treat to discover

Simple food with great flavours in a family friendly relaxed atmosphere. Lovely staff makes this cafe-restaurant home from home. Top tip: Always say yes to dessert.

Had dinner with friends here in Friday night - ordered everything on the menu to share - food was divine!! Every dish was delicious. The space is lovely and bright and comfortable. Staff are friendly and helpful. Timeout - I love you but I think you definitely need to review again - this place is amazing!!

We live In Burbage Leicestershire we came down to London in Aptil as we was walking around Peckham we seen the habit. We went and sat down and was handed a menu the food looked really good the waitress came over and told us the specials for the day we order our food. The food came out very hot and very fresh tasting we got talking to the manger Dan and the head chef John and my girls enjoyed going out the back to where the herb garden is and smelling the herbs.
We have been a few more time since. The habit is the only place I will go now for food when we go down to London.

Love it.

Definitely my favourite place for brunch in surrounding Nunhead/Peckham/East Dulwich area. Having lived in the area for over 3 years I've tried almost al of them too!

I've never left The Habit feeling anything but happy that I've been there. I've been a pretty regular visitor since they opened, mainly for their breakfasts but I've tried the lunch and dinner menu too and have been really impressed. The warm salads and the steak with Cafe de Paris butter stand out for me. The standard of cooking is superb.

I really can't speak highly enough of the food and the service. They do a great job at keeping their dishes simple and very tasty without over complicating things. The atmosphere is very welcoming and comfortable, partly because of the brightness and decor and also because of the lovely service from the staff. It's got a great feel to it.

This place has really set the bar very high for itself and it's great to see. Must be open 3-4 months now and from what I can see the place is coming into its own more every week. It's lovely having somewhere like this to bring others too and knowing it will never disappoint.

This is a stunning new restaurant with a warm, vibrant atmosphere and outstanding food.

There is instantly an intimate, community feel upon walking in. Greeted by friendly, attentive staff, you can already see couples, families and friends enjoying themselves.

The menu offers great variety and the food is bursting with flavour. A nice touch is added in the form of an open plan kitchen, so you can see the effort and precision that the chefs apply to each dish. The food really is special. Delicious flavours and ingredients are successfully combined that the regular restaurant goer might not think to dream up.

Make sure you visit. But make sure you make a reservation - you'll probably need one.

Gorgeous brunch, stunning coffee and the best dessert in town (so glad I didn't agree to share!). Such a cool place with lovely atmosphere and staff.

A lovely little place. Very friendly and welcoming staff and the food was served promptly in a chilled-out, relaxing environment. The food was excellent both times I have been - once for brunch and once for an early dinner (I had the lamb special for Easter). Couldn't fault the food in any way, it was sublime. Coffees, juices and deserts were superb too. I plan to make a habit out of frequenting this inspiring little cafe.

I absolutely loved this place. Standard of cooking was outstanding - way, way above what you might expect from a local eatery. It was a real treat to have good, unpretentious food cooked to such a high standard. Exceptional - I hope to goodness it does well and survives.

Nice looking new café close to the Evelina shops in Nunhead. This new little café is well needed in the area so was pleased to try it out.

It was a bit of a mixed experience so I'll start with the less-good bits, it took a little while for staff to acknowledge us and actually the young staff member that did finally approach us was quite unhelpful (really had no idea if they could seat us  anytime soon and suggested we go away and come back then seated two other tables before us and left me standing in their doorway) normally I'd have left at this point but the smell of fresh toast and the bubble and squeak I could spy on another table kept me waiting. We eventually wrestled a table and (the same young waiter) started to (try and) serve us. To be totally honest he was the very poor but it began to be clear that he couldn't help it and we got through it.

We ordered two smoked chicken salads (delicious, maybe a bit too peppery) and two of their fry-ups which were amazing. The Bubble and kale was perfect, soft but crispy on the outside and really hearty. The sausage was no joke the best I've had in years, bacon was great quality too but quite small portion wise (although extras are only 50p so if I'd have know I could have added that on and would have), the sourdough bread was delicious (although ours came really burnt).

The fresh juice was good (again a little small for the price) and the coffees were good too.

All in all we could tell there were teething problems with service (please sort this out as it could have ruined the experience completely) and portions could have been tweaked slightly but the venue was clean, fresh and comfortable and the food was good quality and made very quickly. Will be returning for a second chance on the negatives as the positives did out-weigh them but wouldn't give necessarily risk a third chance if no improvement (sorry)
