A summery revamp of Street Feast’s Hawker House

Despite what ‘Game of Thrones’ has to say, summer is coming. At Hawker House, where street food grazers pack into a huge Canada Water warehouse space that is essentially a metal box, this means one thing: people are going to start sweating into their lobster rolls. So the HH team have sensibly revamped it, halving the indoor space, throwing the shutters open and creating a brand-new forecourt called The Land of Bamboo.

The vibe? Tropical Paradise by way of a South London Industrial Estate. Red-and-yellow lighting festoons the courtryard, where there’s a tiki-hut rum bar and a new ‘dessert bar’ from nitro ice-cream specialists Chin Chin Labs covered in bamboo sushi-rolling mats. A humongous panorama of a tropical lagoon looms overhead, and there’s an outdoor fire pit adding to a collection of flaming oil drums.

You’ll still find stalls from seafood supremos Prawnography (don’t miss their £3 grilled scallops), barbecue geniuses Smokestak (get to them early, before they sell out), ever-reliable bao fanciers Yum Bun, plus plenty more, from BOB’s Lobster and Meat Hook to Thai newbie Farang (which deals in prawn-and-pork burgers). You can even get pulled jackfruit burritos from vegan specialists Club Mexicana (be warned: there’s always a massive queue).

Basically, it’s all the great food and fun vibes of Hawker House, but with more outdoor space. Summer’s coming: time to join the flesh-eating hordes.
