The Ship of Adventures is the Dalston home of young people's educational charity The Hackney Pirates, who offer after-school support in literacy, confidence and perseverance to local children aged 9-12. It is also a bookshop, gift shop and café that is decked out so elaborately in its pirate ship theme that visitors may well think they feel the swell of the ocean beneath their sandwiches. The café sells a range of coffees and teas as well as homemade breakfasts, sandwiches, salads and soups. A fancy dress box, colouring sheets, puzzles and a secret passageway should help entertain kids who have finished their lunch.

The most amazing cafe & shop; it's like you're literally walking into a ship! They make delicious coffee and you're supporting a great cause - The Hackney Pirates!

Most Londoner’s have a secret dream of taking a leaf out of Peter Pan’s book and not doing this growing up thing.

Whilst developments in this fantasy are still in progress (trust me, I’m first in line) Dalston have come pretty close in offering the next best thing.

Hackney Pirates is a non-for profit charity that helps develop the confidence, literacy and determination in the youth of Hackney. They anchored their ship on Kingsland High Street and ever since, The Ship of Adventures has invited everyone to come on board. And shiver me timbers: Captain Hook hasn’t got a clue.

Contrary to what old legends would have you believe, these pirates are the friendliest bunch and don’t stink of rum. The décor is made to look as though their ship has been turned into a shop/café/workspace – with space downstairs where workshops with kids take place. It’s also available to hire for authentic pirate parties.

The coffees and cakes on offer here are always spot-on. On my most recent convoy I consumed a Chai Latte and a Strawberry Flapjack. And OOH-AAR me hearties, they were as delicious as they look. They've got a vast selection of books, prints and quirky cards available to purchase too. It’s quite small, so when it’s full of shipmates AHOY-ING, it can get rather loud. Everything you can buy has been locally made and all proceeds go to the Hackney Pirates charity. Any excuse to eat cake guilt-free right?

So when you're next passing Kingsland High Street, make sure YE pop in for a browse, something to eat/drink or even to check out the trap door (if you can find it). And fear not. These pirates aren’t the type to make you walk the plank. Regardless of the fact it doesn’t have one, they’re in Dalston and that’s miles from the sea. (And The Thames.)

Fantastic little café in Dalston - great coffee, great food and friendly staff and - wow - in what looks like the inside of a pirate ship :0)

Great coffee, lovely staff, beautifully created surroundings... and it's an educational charity, so it's so much more than just a intriguing place to visit.

It's a cafe AND a ship, and anything you buy here supports The Hackney Pirates work with young people from the local area, and helps facilitate their adventures in learning! (...And the coffee is pretty good too!)

Friendly staff and a wide selection of drinks and sandwiches, cakes and snacks in a really unique pirate themed setting. All this and a shop with quirky books and trinkets to buy and of course a great cause to support of helping children read and write. Some of the books the children make can actually be bought in the shop too - another good reason to go and check it out!

Very original cafe. Feeling like inside old history pirate ship! Extreme cool place with good food and nice service people

Chris C

Most original cafe in London and probably England. Atmosphere is really cool and unusual, food is great, people are even nicer - can't think of any reason why anyone wouldn't enjoy The Ship of Adventures

Will S

Great food, fantastic atmosphere, awesome staff. You feel great every time you stop by!

The Ship of Adventures is easy in every way. It's not rushed, the food is excellent, and it's easy on the wallet. The people who run it are friendly but not overly and they go out of their way to remember me from time to time. Fantastic neighborhood place and best of all, The Ship helps students with a reading access program for children. Hands down, the best cafe in the area.

Andrew, one of the owners, pours the best macchiato I've ever had. The Ship is cozy with great places to sit and work, or just enjoy one's coffee. An added benefit is the proximity to the great work done by the Hackney Pirates. Great coffee shop!

Mariusz G

The best coffee you can have in Stokey! And come on who doesn't like to feel like a pirate on the ship?!

Maddie C

how can you not love this place? it's an actual pirate ship - secret passageways included - and the profits go to charity! win win situation really

Charlie D

Just the best place - the staff are so friendly, the food is well-priced and tasty, oh and - IT'S IN A PIRATE SHIP! Amazing.

David K

A totally unique cafe set inside a quirky comfy pirate ship. Staff are friendly, coffees bang-on and killer cookies. Also a great shop selling the work of local artists. Proceeds go to helping the charity that occupies the same building, which works with local kids to give their literacy and all-round confident a boost. What's not to love?

I always felt like a pirate. Now I got the ship. Super friendly and loyal crew. Awesome decor.

One of the coolest, most fun places in London. Who wouldn't want a flapjack in a pirate ship in Hackney?!
