This venerable Nunhead operation has been serving the local community for more than a century (it opened in 1897). The area may have changed a lot since then, but Soper’s reputation for flipping good fish hasn’t. Well-priced British varieties arrive daily from Cornish day-boats while the exotics are acquired at Billingsgate Market. Almost all the varieties on sale are line-caught. While most fishmongers put their feet up on a Sunday, Soper’s continues to furnish local shoppers with the latest haul.

This has been a one stop shop for fish for decades - my grandmother shopped here. They know they business so well they can spot a Jamie Oliver recipe when you are ordering and tweak it to improve!
Food fads and hip shops may come and go but Sopers is proof that consistently thoughtful, good and intelligent service, real knowledge and high quality produce always win through - decade after decade after decade.
Kids will love their breaded mackerel (frozen) and handily, they are even open on a Sunday morning for a few hours.
This is a real gem. We look forward to our visits to Nunhead so we can buy fish at this excellent shop. There is a wide variety of fresh and tasty fish and we are always given expert advice. The friendly and efficient service means we always feel satisfied with our visit, often coming away with new varieties to try.
Friendly, charming even, it's as if they are waiting for our visit! And in reality, we really looking forward to going to Sopers, where we go for all our fishy shopping... and we live in North London! Particularly love the huge variety of both fresh and smoked or otherwise prepared fish. Love their kippers, skate cheeks, jellied eels, fresh herring, smoked salmon scraps, fresh sea bass, smoked eel... and I usually get myself an oyster opened to eat there and then.
