Oxford Street’s only remaining megastore – now that Virgin/Zavvi and Borders have bitten the dust – the HMV flagship is a first and last stop for CDs, records and DVDs covering all genres.

The sensory overload may be too much for those who prefer the more relaxing and personalised atmosphere of some of the small independents, but there’s no denying the width and breadth of the stock available here. And with competitive seasonal sales, cut-price box sets and hundreds of rarities and imports, there’s little chance you’ll leave this world-beating behemoth of a store empty-handed.

The vast basement houses broad classical, world music and jazz sections, and staff are always on hand to locate discs for you.

I could spend hours and hours here browsing everything on offer... but these days my eyes are only on the records upstairs. The North American HMV stores are closing down now, which makes me sad, but this place puts it all to rights. From the sign out front with the dog and the phonograph, to the selection of vinyl (new and classic releases), I feel at home here. The staff are more attentive than any I knew from the stores of my youth in Canada, and aren't uppity in a way a lot of record store staff can be. Definitely worth checking out.
