This cult British knitwear label has been around in some form or other since 1784 – and the brand still manufactures its high-quality garments in its original Lea Mills factory in Derbyshire. Initially an underwear specialist, John Smedley is now a brand associated with fine-knit merino wool sweaters and tops for both men and women; and despite its proud heritage, the label manages to retain a contemporary look with colourful yet muted hues and flattering cuts. The relaxed and stylish flagship shop has been open since 2000, receiving a redesign in 2009 to reflect the company’s Derbyshire roots with limestone flooring and green tones. As well as ethically sourced New Zealand merino wool, extra-fine jersey is now used for some garments.
