Enjoying a string of awards since opening in the late 1990s, North One Garden Centre has grown from a small backyard independent to a boutique-style gardener's essential with an array of shrubs and indoor plants. The North One team knows their urban clientele well and the site is dressed like an interiors magazine, with garden design furniture and chic accessories (it's a gnome-free zone). But for all its designer's eye, it's hugely practical too with a good range of solid tools, Franchi heirlooms seeds, and friendly and knowledgeble service. They can also deliver, too. In 2011 the North One team opened West Six, another garden centre in, um, W6.

Definitely not the place for you to buy an array of succulents, but if you're on the hunt for those extra bits (ie. soil and a shovel) this is your place. I would say that North One has everything to facilitate better gardening but you need to have already caught the plant-loving bug before you get here. Pop by Columbia Road to get your plants, and then once they're looking happy come here to upgrade them to bigger pots and maybe learn a little about what suits them best from the staff on hand.

Unlike the other reviews, I didn't find North One particularly expensive, but maybe its because I only bought what I needed each time I've been.

The staff are very helpful and clearly passionate about gardening. There's a small and well-curated selection of plants, so it's not overwhelming the way some of the warehouse-style nurseries are.

Expensive - the nearby Growing Concerns in Hackney Wick is a quarter of the price and a social enterprise to boot.

North One is a Great garden centre. I feel inspired every time I visit. Knowledgeable people and the plants are top quality.

I have been going to North One for years and all the plants I have brought have thrived. It always looks fantastic and the staff are very friendly and helpful.

The most overpriced shop I have ever been to. Exclusively for people with more money than sense. Breathtaking rip off. Simple cheap houseplant - £15 upwards (50p in car boot, £2 ikea, £3 supermarket) anything vaguely exotic looking £50+ (but actually not exotic at all). Shrubs all £50+ simple pot £20+. RIDICULOUS
