The London Overground has an unexpected ancestor. The line from West Croydon to New Cross Gate is built on the Croydon Canal, a lost waterway which was once used by horse-pulled narrowboats. In 1836, most of it was filled in, but a few hundred metres of the canal remain in Betts Park, prettily overhung with trees.
